This morning, as I hurriedly strapped on my seat belt and put the car in reverse, my daughter, Alayna, said, “Here Mama. Hold this.”
“Don’t hand me something when I am trying to drive,” I answered in a short manner.
I looked. It was a silly band…one in the shape of an angel. Immediately, I was ashamed.
“What did you want me to do with it?” I asked.
“I wanted you to put it on,” she replied.
It was a simple gesture of love. It was something she wanted to give me so that we could be alike.
The manner in which she first spoke to me made me think that she wanted me to hold something for her while I was driving. I had been mistaken, and I felt terrible about it.
I put the silly band on my wrist, and I am still wearing it a few hours later. She is not here. She is at school, but we are still alike.
The Holy Spirit spoke to me that we, as humans, can be much like I was this morning. We are so busy that when our loving God wants to give us something, we don’t even take the time to notice what it is. Often, it is something that will make us more like Him. (Something that we should put on daily is His righteousness!)
The talents, gifts and abilities that He holds for us are of Him, by Him and through Him. Outside of the power of God, we would not even have life, much less any quality of one.
How many opportunities to receive a gift from God have I passed up? How many times has He given me the ability to respond to situations in a Christ-like manner, and I didn’t apply His precepts in my life? Too many to be numbered, I am sure.
So, I am sitting here, looking at this silly band and cherishing the opportunity that I have to be “like” Alayna today. I pray that I will recognize all that God has for me, receive it, cherish it and apply it to my life so that I may be more “Christ-like” also.
Be blessed in Jesus’ Name,
Angie
