Love Birds

A true story...
Love Birds

There were two birds that fell in love, yes, in love they were.
Oh, how much she loved him, and he proposed to her.
No roses did he ever bring, but he brought her there to them
And there they stayed safe in a nest…she snuggled close to him.
In the fall and winter, through short days and long nights
The love birds stayed together, always in my sight.
I loved their sweet togetherness, they never were apart
They stayed there in the rose bush, where they had made a start.
Then in the spring, a rosebud appeared on every stem,
And as each rose unfolded, I carefully watched them.
They sang among the branches, in the fragrant air.
It must have been a love song, sung between the pair.
Then one tragic day, an accident took one of the little birds.
The love song that once filled the air ceased to be heard.
All alone, the one bird stayed, living in the rose bush there
Waiting for the spring to come, and for the bush to bear…
The sweet and fragrant roses that never did he bring
But built for her a house in them and then began to sing.
The sweet familiar love song I heard him sing those days…
He now sings to greet me in the rose bush where he stays.
He sings of her sweet memory, hoping that one day
She’ll call him from where ‘ere she went, and then he’ll fly away.
Until then, I keep watching him, and I wait to see
The wonder of this one true love…could it ever be?
Every morning, he’s still there watching what I do
From the little home he built for her in the rose bush that I grew.
He greets me and I talk to him, and we’ve become good friends.
And he is faithful to his love…waiting in the nest he tends.
So I wish him beauty, in the rose bush where he stays.
Reminded of his sweet love and the song he sang those days,
I wish him peace and happiness and the goodness life will bring
As the fragrant roses bloom each and every spring.
